Faced with relocating their church from the City of
Lebanon to a new development north of town, the congregation
of St. Stephen’s UCC Church in Lebanon
sought to create an accessible and inviting church and
parish center. Kaylor Architects, Inc. was commissioned to
assist them in their efforts and encouraged them to salvage
and incorporate elements
from their existing church that was slated to be demolished as
part of the local hospital’s expansion. The new one story
accessible 250 seat sanctuary is designed to allow for the
future expansion to a full 500 seat sanctuary. Poised at the
entrance to a new housing development, the new church is
topped with the former church’s contemporary copper spire
and the congregation enters the new sanctuary through the
former sanctuary’s refurbished glass and wood doors.
Restored light fixtures, reconditioned pews and relocated and
backlit stained glass panels created an instant feeling of
familiarity and comfort for the congregation. A large narthex
with accessible restrooms, nursery, church office suite with
pastor’s office and library / conference room, choir room
and classrooms adjoin the church to a large multipurpose room
and full service kitchen. The multipurpose room is designed
for the future construction of an adjacent fellowship hall and
gymnasium. The upper portion of the former church’s bell
tower was relocated to site to further connect the new church
to the old.
