With the closure of the adjacent historic Peoples National
Bank building, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church
was presented with the opportunity to acquire a property that
would permit them to create a parish center which had been
lacking since their new church facility was constructed in the
early 1970’s. With nearly 37,000 SF in four interconnected
existing buildings over four floors and a basement with which
to work with, the charge of the building committee was to
maximize the reuse of as much of the existing conditions as
possible and “if it wasn’t broke, don’t fix it” while
working in the requirements of the parish center program. With
many of the former bank’s spaces finding uses as parish
offices, storage rooms and meeting rooms, the most dramatic
transformation was of the former teller floor area to a new
intimate and sacred 100 seat daily mass chapel. The second
floor was converted to rectory uses and provides three private
priests’ residences as well as two full guest suites, full
service kitchen, common dining room and living room and a
private chapel. In addition to convenient first floor meeting
and social rooms, a full service kitchen and new fellowship
hall were created on the third floor with a new four stop 15
passenger hydraulic elevator providing full accessibility to
this level. A formal meeting room with a window overlooking
the adjacent church completes the third floor. Even the former
bank’s large basement level vault found reuse as a
repository for the church’s valuable achieves which
chronicle this centuries old historic congregation.
